Volcanic Lanzarote, lanzarote, canary islands, travel to lanzarote, Spanish holiday islands

The Canary Islands are located just off the coast of Africa. And enjoy a semi-tropical climate – making them an ideal holiday destination all year round.

As a result the islands have become a real hot favourite with visitors from sun starved Northern European nations such as the UK and Germany, attracting around nine million foreign tourists every year.

Lanzarote is the fourth largest of the islands. With a much more arid and barren terrain than the larger, lusher islands of Tenefire and Gran Canaria. This is due to the fact that Lanzarote is located just 100 miles or so away from the western fringes of the Sahara Desert and experiences very little rainfall – around 9mm per month.

But that’s not to say that the island is lacking in beauty. As Lanzarote boasts a great many natural wonders such as the surreal scenery of the Timanfaya Volcano Park as well as a host of great beaches – close to 100 in fact.

Travel To Lanzarote

Lanzarote is just a four hour flight from the UK. With flights to the island available with most of the main budget airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair.

On arrival visitors should note that there is no onward shuttle to the resorts. So it is important to either pre book a transfer or hire a car. As the alternative can be a lengthy wait for a taxi.

Island Accommodation

There are plenty of places to stay around the island. For those looking to splash out the best Lanzarote villas and hotels can be found in the resort of Playa Blanca which is located right at the southern foot of the island. Whilst those on a budget should head for Puerto del Carmen, the largest resort as this is where they will find the greatest concentration of good value apartment complexes.

Getting Around

Unlike most other Spanish holiday islands car hire on Lanzaorte is surprisingly cheap with rental rates starting from just €15 per day. The island is also very small, measuring 40km by 60km which makes it very easy to take in all of the key sights.

Sightseeing

As well as the volcanic region and the great beaches Lanzarote is home to some very pretty towns and villages such as Haria, which is located in the Valley of 1000 Palms. This is the greenest spot on the island – created by a tradition which locals have followed for centuries of planting a palm tree for every new born baby.
