Some tourist destinations hold an obvious appeal. The pyramids of Egypt or the Eiffel tower in Paris continue to attract visitors year in, year out. And with good reason, as they offer a unique experience to the many holidaymakers who visit them.

The same can also be said of Lanzarote. Its location gives it an enviable climate all year round, with lots of sunshine hours and very little rainfall. It also has a great array of beaches, with some of the most beautiful playas to be found anywhere in Europe.

But its appeal doesn’t end here, as the island is extremely unspoilt and has preserved much of its rural charm despite welcoming thousands of visitors a year for the last forty years. The main resorts are low key and have well developed infrastructures to satisfy the needs of holidaymakers.

This is especially true of the newest resort of Playa Blanca. Developed over the last ten years, it has an extensive range of private accommodation, with villas in Playa Blanca being particularly popular. These tend to be of good quality construction, with private pool areas and sunbathing terraces, whilst the interiors are cool and airy.

That being said, all of the holiday villas in Lanzarote share these elements, ensuring maximum sunshine hours outdoors, whilst providing a retreat from the heat when it is needed. But it is certainly true that a much larger proportion of visitors to the island are spending their holidays in Playa Blanca these days.

The one slight disadvantage that Playa Blanca has over the other resorts is that it is further away from the rest of the island and its attractions. But as car hire in Lanzarote is extremely cheap in comparison with the UK and petrol is similarly affordable, a hire car soon eliminates this small drawback.

And Lanzarote has such a good range of tourist centres and historically interesting sites it is well worth hiring a car to make the most of a holiday. The roads are quiet and a pleasure to drive on, whilst the small size of the island means that you can take in almost all of it in one or two days.

Not to be missed are the creations of island born artist César Manrique, whose unique eye has transformed geological phenomenon such as subterranean lava tunnels to the most amazing effect. Not only does this include the Jameos del Agua, once called the eighth natural wonder of the world, but even the artist’s own house, built out of underground volcanic bubbles.
